Car Q&A With Golfer, Peter Baker
Popular professional golfer, Peter Baker is Pink Car Leasing’s newest brand ambassador. As Peter takes a break from the course due to the current situation, he spoke to us about how he’s been spending his time at home, his driving history and his brand new BMW.
Q. We know that you love cars and are thrilled with your BMW 320. Why did you choose that particular model?
My BMW 320 diesel estate is a great car for travelling as it has a superb boot space for my luggage, golf clubs and all the other bits you need as a tournament golfer. The other important point is that the seats are so comfortable, which is ideal for those long journeys to the tournaments.
Q. Have you managed to drive your new car yet? If not, where is the first place you're going to take it for a test drive?
Fortunately, I did manage to travel around a reasonable amount before the lockdown, mainly to tournaments. What I’m looking forward to most after all this is over is driving the car to my second home, the golf course, when we are able to play again.
Q. Let’s talk about your first car. What was it and did you love it?
I’m not making this up, my first car was a Triumph Dolomite in a yellow mustard colour with a brown vinyl roof. And no, I didn’t love it!
Q. Presumably, your attitude towards cars has changed since then! What is it that you look for in a car now?
These days when I’m looking for a new car, the first thing I consider is the boot space, which obviously needs to be large as I travel a lot with luggage cases and golf clubs. After that, I look at the safety, performance and style of the car.
Q. If you could plan your dream road trip, where would you go?
My dream road trip would be a drive across the USA, where I could just take my time and enjoy the experience.
Q. Whilst we might not like to admit it, we all have that one song that we love to play in the car. Can you tell us your perfect drivetime playlist?
The tunes I play in the car vary but, I generally do like an 80’s playlist, some Rolling Stones or Oasis or some Radio 5.
Q. With the golf season currently on hold, how are you keeping yourself busy?
Although I’m definitely missing being out on the course, I have been trying to practice my short game at home, which has been keeping me occupied.
Q. Do you have any advice for any golfers who may also be missing the green and are worried about losing their touch?
Yes, there are a couple of things you can do at home while we are unable to play on the course. You can practice putting on the carpet into a glass and if you have a garden, try a bit of chipping, just to keep your touch going.
Q. We've recently launched a competition where we're asking people to send in their best golf trick. What's the best trick you can do or the best one you have seen?
If I’m being honest, I’m not that good at doing trick shots myself - perhaps this is something else I can be practicing at home! The best ones I’ve seen have been unbelievable shots played by the magician, Seve Ballesteros. I guess you could call them trick shots but they were also just pure genius!
Q. And finally, we have to ask… who's the best driver in your family?
I’ll have to say that the best driver in my family is a tie between my wife, Helen and I, just in case she reads this…
